Creeping Patterns
with Malte Urban
September 3 - 25, 2021
On the occasion of the DC Open 2021, Nails projectroom is showing artworks by Malte Urban, an artist from Leipzig in the rooms on Birkenstrasse in Flingern.
Originally, 'Creeping Patterns' was planned as an evaluation of a research stay in Seoul, South Korea within the framework of a DAAD scholarship for short-term stays abroad. Due to the pandemic-related travel restrictions, the project was implemented through an online exchange.
The exhibition is conceived as an expansive installation in which sculptures and large-format prints create an immersive landscape. At the centre of the works is the 'modding' (modifying, altering) of computers, in which their analogue shells are rebuilt and decorated along the lines of digital games.
Here the artist refers to current concepts such as 'social distancing' and 'virtual activities'.
Virtual Activities'. He transfers the interaction of living space and architecture, which are currently strongly determined by digital media, aesthetically and functionally to his sculptures. The exhibited objects function as containers for digital archives: 3D scans of sculptural landscapes taken by the artist in the studio. The prints create the worlds and maps into which objects dive and from which they emerge.
